Google Makes Splash With Christoph Niemann Illustration To Mark Summer Solstice 2013

Google Doodle summer solstice 2013

Today’s Google Doodle by Christoph Niemann marks the summer solstice for searchers in the Northern Hemisphere with an animated illustration of five swimmers in Google-logo colored swimming caps, bobbing along on a wave that splashes back and forth.

Google users in the Southern Hemisphere get their own Google Doodle to mark the first day of their winter solstice with an animated image of a scarf being knitted in the same Google-logo inspired colors.

Both animated doodles were created by famed German illustrator and graphic designer Christoph Niemann, the author of several children’s books and The New York Times Magazine blog Abstract Sunday.

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere, falling on Friday June 21, 2013 at 1:04 a.m. EST. For the Southern Hemisphere, June 21, 2013 marks the winter solstice and shortest day of the year on the other half of the world. Clicking on each logo takes users to search results for summer solstice or winter solstice.
