Today’s Google logo marks the search engine’s sweet sixteen.
Founded in 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google started out as “BackRub” – a search engine Brin and Page originally constructed in 1996 using links to rank the importance of individual web pages. By 1998, “BackRub” had become Google, with Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim offering Brin and Page a $100,000 in funding to back their website.
In the same way most 16 years olds are both the joy and misery of their parent’s lives, Google has become the focus of many SEOs who spend their days trying to understand, and keep up, with its inner workings.
To celebrate its 16th birthday, Google animated its logo, putting a birthday hat on the letter “G” as it marks how tall the letters “o” and “l” have grown:
