Google is celebrating International Women’s Day today, replacing it’s usual Google logo with an illustrated doodle highlighting the economical, political and sociological achievements made by women around the world during the past century.

Since its inception in Copenhagen in 1911, International Women’s Day has served to recognize and help advance women’s rights across the globe.

More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.

According to the International Women’s Day website, “…more than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women’s rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination.”

The day is now an official holiday in a number of countries including China, Nepal, Uganda and Vietnam, often times treated with the same significance as Mother’s Day:

Google has elected to feature the doodle on its homepages worldwide, doing its part to honor women across all nations and cultures.
